When winter comes, I grumble …
For approximately 6 years, I’ve been grumbling about winter, the cold, the snow, the ice, the sludge. To put it simply, from November to March, my favorite sport is to have a fire in the fireplace and stay warm while dreaming about beaches and palm threes.
In fact, since our trip to Costa Rica I have been grumbling. (You can read about our trip to Costa Rica here) Before our trip I liked the cold weather.
In the old days, I loved to shovel! I had trails everywhere. To the bird feeder, the electrical meter, the compost bin, to get to the garage… Once Dan offered to buy me a snow blower. Even though it would have been easier I never wanted one. I used the snow scrapper to make my trails and I really enjoyed it. Things have changed since then!!
As we passed our winters sitting in front of the fireplace, our son, Alexy. kept telling us that if we wanted to enjoy winter all we had to do was stop grumbling and get outside and partake in the joy of winter. Deep inside I knew he was right, but I lacked the courage. We were so comfortable in front of the fire. : -)
Since then, two things have changed
First, we moved. Before, we were living in town. In a semi-detached. The area was fine, but still, it was the city and the houses had small yards So not much to do outside except maybe take the car and drive to the country. Isshhh, not very interesting!!!
The house that we purchased last April has a lot of land and no neighbours in the back. We can go in the woods, just off our backyard, for walks, running, and snowshoeing.
Secondly, the main point that made the difference, we got a dog, a female Border Collie. We call her Beta and she is hyperactive like all other Border Collies. Needless to say it has forced us to go outside. Walk, run…. Move.
Every morning no matter the weather, we take Beta for a walk in the woods to expend some of that energy. This way she is calm and doesn’t eat everything in sight.
And guess what? I like that. I finally got my winter groove back, no more grumbling when I see the snow falling or when it’s cold. Once again, I enjoy shoveling. I guess I’ve built up my resistance to the cold. Now when it’s -15C , I don’t find it that cold…
If you are in the same situation as I was last year and that you grumble about winter as you sit in front of the fire. I invite you (just like Alexy did with us) to get outside and participate in winter sports every day… You’ll see, you’ll get used to it!
